Mary Elizabeth Wilson

Born in Helena, Montana in 1869.

1891. Graduated from Smith College with a degree in English.

1896. Earned a master's degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

1906. Joined Miss Heads' Preparatory School for Girls faculty.

1909. Became headmistress after having purchased Miss Heads' School.

1919. Name changed to The Anna Head School.

1909-1938. Led a total of 29 graduation processions before retirement.

Miss Wilson's Smith College experience shaped her ideas about education, and for the rest of her career she looked to eastern schools for her models, making annual trips to observe and emulate the best programs she could find... While she intended it to remain very much a college preparatory institution (trying valiantly over the years to recruit her best students for her alma mater, Smith College), Miss Wilson's primary goal was to develop the student's "initiative, her interest in other people, her real power for living a happy, earnest, useful life." Her program offered a "well-balanced life of earnest study, outdoor sports, and the cultivation of a delight in music and the other arts." The school slogan of the time summed up the ideals held for every Anna Head girl: "Intelligence, Integrity, Breeding and Service."

1938. Retired and sold the school to T.R. and Lea Hyde.

Died in 1949.
