Study
Design and Planning
SRC staff have assisted investigators in designing research to
serve a wide range of purposes. Normally, a research design evolves
through close collaboration between the investigator and SRC staff
and often includes such activities as:
-
assessing the feasibility of study objectives and considering
alternative research designs;
-
defining the study population and key concepts in operational
terms;
-
selecting methods of sampling, data collection, and analysis
appropriate to the study's objectives; and
-
developing realistic budgets and time schedules for each stage
of the research.
Because careful advance planning is a prerequisite for effective
research, investigators are urged to seek consultation about research
design early in the planning phase of projects. Investigators
who are applying to outside agencies for funds should consult
with SRC staff about design questions during the drafting of grant
or contract proposals. Free cost estimates will be provided to
develop mutually agreed upon proposals for surveys.
