Athletic teams were added to the school in 1911 (basketball), 1913 (tennis), and 1916 (field hockey and swimming).

In Nods and Becks of May 1897, Walter Magee, the Director of Physical Culture at the University of California, commented:

By far the most popular and beneficial [sport] is the game of basketball, which was introduced into California some six years ago. The young ladies of Miss Head's School and the young ladies of the University of California participated in the first match game ever played between women anywhere, resulting in the defeat of the University team by a score of 4 to 3."

Tennis proved to be the most successful.

1923. Helen Wills Moody won first of seven U.S. Lawn Tennis Women's Singles Championship.

1926. Helen Wills Moody won first of eight Wimbledon titles.

1932. Helen Jacobs (class of '26) won first of four U.S. Lawn Tennis Women's Singles Championship.

1936. Helen Jacobs won Wimbledon Championship.
