Miss
Wilson and Helen Wills Moody (class of '23)
- Athletic
teams were added to the school in 1911 (basketball), 1913 (tennis),
and 1916 (field hockey and swimming).
- In
Nods and Becks of May 1897, Walter Magee, the Director
of Physical Culture at the University of California, commented:
- By
far the most popular and beneficial [sport] is the game of
basketball, which was introduced into California some six
years ago. The young ladies of Miss Head's School and the
young ladies of the University of California participated
in the first match game ever played between women anywhere,
resulting in the defeat of the University team by a score
of 4 to 3."
Tennis
proved to be the most successful.
- 1923.
Helen Wills Moody won first of seven U.S. Lawn Tennis
Women's Singles Championship.
- 1926.
Helen Wills Moody won first of eight Wimbledon titles.
- 1932.
Helen Jacobs (class of '26) won first of four U.S.
Lawn Tennis Women's Singles Championship.
- 1936.
Helen Jacobs won Wimbledon Championship.
