Overview
of the Services Offered by SSF
The Survey Services Facility has an impressive record of
performance in professional social research, with a strong dedication
to quality control and to the introduction of new methodologies.
Staff have extensive experience in designing and conducting surveys
using techniques, such as probability sampling and structured
questionnaires, that are at the cutting edge of survey research
methodology. While the Center takes part in both academic and
non-academic research projects, its capabilities and standards
reflect its location in a university setting. The following characteristics
of SRC's research capability deserve special attention:
-
maintenance of a professional staff with experience in both
basic and applied research;
-
striving for a high academic standard of performance in all
services;
-
flexibility to tailor study designs to the specific needs of
the particular investigation, including atypical survey conditions;
and
-
emphasis on the development of new methodologies for data collection
and analysis.
The
Center offers a full range of services for surveys, including
study
design and planning;
survey sampling;
instrument design;
data collection;
data processing and management; and
computer-assisted telephone interviewing. They are available
to our clientele in any combination, from one specific research
operation to a completely integrated package of services which
carries a research project from beginning to end. Berkeley campus
faculty, students, and staff may receive up to two hours
of free consultation relating to the conduct of a survey research
project.
Once there is mutual agreement on Center services to be performed,
the client submits an Application for Use of Services form
acknowledging primary responsibility for the project, specifying
the extent of SRC participation in the work, and authorizing expenditures
up to a certain amount. This form is then countersigned by the
appropriate Center staff. Formal contracts with clients must be
reviewed and approved by UC Berkeley's Sponsored Projects Office
and the University's legal counsel.
